Course Overview
Following completion of the City & Guilds Know Your Garden, other level 2 horticulture course or equivalent experience, this hands-on course is designed to develop and extend your practical horticultural skills through a real garden renovation project.
Modules
You will work as part of a team to restore the Stanmer Park Long Border, guided by your tutor, who will act as advisor and project lead and follow an agreed plan of action.
The course covers all aspects of a large-scale project, including:
- Planning and designing the space
- Planting, propagation and seed sowing
- Building elements such as raised beds
- Plant selection and sourcing
- Sustainable practices, including recycling and upcycling
- Waste management and environmental considerations
- Maintenance and watering strategies
- Coordinating tasks with other departments (e.g. tree surgery, Plumpton Grounds and Gardens)
You will also help plan practical activities that can be shared with other courses, supporting both your project and wider student learning.
This is a creative and collaborative course focused on transforming a space from “nothing to something,” developing problem-solving skills and practical experience throughout.
By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to undertake garden renovation projects independently or as part of a team.
Assessment
The course is unaccredited, but you will receive a Plumpton certificate on completion. Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, which may include photographs, drawings and written work documenting the project.

Please be prepared by wearing steel toe capped boots or protective footwear and bring your own pair of secateurs and gloves.
