Course overview
Discover the hidden partnerships between plants and
fungi that underpin healthy soils and thriving ecosystems.
Beneath our feet
lies an extraordinary network of fungal life. Mycorrhizal fungi form
partnerships with the majority of plants, creating connections that can
influence nutrient uptake, water relationships, soil structure and plant
health.
This one-day course introduces the fascinating world of mycorrhizae
and explores what happens beneath the soil surface. We will examine the biology
of these relationships and consider what they mean for horticulture,
arboriculture, garden design and soil management.
Modules
You will explore:• The major types of mycorrhizal association• How plants and fungi exchange resources• Mycorrhizae, soil structure and nutrient cycling• The relationship between fungi, roots and soil organisms• Disturbance, cultivation and soil health• How our horticultural practices affect soil fungi• Practical approaches to supporting living soils
