What is it like to be a student on this course?

If you’re considering the Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma in Dog Grooming at Plumpton College, you can expect a more advanced and professional experience than Level 2. The course is designed to prepare you to work as a professional dog groomer, whether that’s in a salon, for a franchise, or as a self-employed business owner.

During the course, you’ll spend a significant amount of time grooming dogs in a practical salon environment, refining your styling and finishing techniques across a variety of breeds and coat types. You’ll develop greater confidence working independently while still receiving guidance from experienced tutors. The course also covers health and safety, industry legislation, health checking, customer service, and record keeping, helping you understand the full responsibilities of a professional groomer.

You will work with a range of dogs requiring different grooming techniques and styles, learning how to achieve professional standards while prioritising each dog’s welfare and comfort. As your skills progress, you’ll be expected to take greater responsibility for planning and carrying out complete grooms.

The learning environment is likely to feel supportive but demanding, as students are working towards industry-recognised professional standards. Assessment includes both practical assignments and a written examination, so you’ll need to demonstrate both technical skills and underpinning knowledge.

By the end of the programme, you should be able to groom dogs to a professional standard, carry out health checks, communicate effectively with clients, maintain industry best practice, and confidently move into employment or self-employment within the dog grooming industry.

In short, being a Level 3 Dog Grooming student at Plumpton College is likely to feel like stepping into the role of a professional groomer, combining advanced practical skills, customer care, business awareness, and extensive hands-on experience working with dogs.
