Course overview
Would you like to develop essential knowledge, skills and behaviours
needed for further study and employment in engineering?
Learners on this programme will develop practical workshop skills alongside
an understanding of engineering mathematics, science, health and safety, design,
manufacture, electrical principles and teamwork.
The course is designed to be practical and engaging, with learners completing
a range of engineering activities and projects, working with hand tools,
workshop machinery, computer-aided design, welding and electrical circuits.
The programme also supports the development of employability skills,
including communication, working in a team, searching for employment and
completing an engineering project, supporting progression to land-based
engineering, motor vehicle engineering or related technical programmes at Level
2.
Modules
Across a two-year cycle modules include:
- Safe working practices in an engineering environment.
- Practical skills using hand tools, machinery and workshop equipment.
- Basic engineering mathematics and science.
- Mechanical assembly and manufacturing skills.
- Welding and joining techniques.
- Electrical wiring and circuit-building skills.
- Computer-aided drawing and design skills.
- Project planning, problem-solving and evaluation.
- Teamwork, communication and employability skills.
- An understanding of progression routes and engineering careers.
What is it like to be a student on this course?
As a student on this course, you will learn by doing. You’ll spend time in the workshop using tools and machinery to make components, assemble mechanical parts, explore welding and build electrical circuits. You’ll also use computers to create CAD designs and complete engineering projects with other students. Alongside the practical work, you’ll develop your maths, science, problem-solving, teamwork and employability skills, building a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your progress. The course is varied and hands-on, but you’ll need to work safely, listen carefully, take pride in your work and be willing to learn from feedback.
Student testimonial
I chose this course because I wanted to learn more about cars as it is something I am interested in. I particularly like the practical side of the course and I learn something different every week. I am going to stay at Plumpton College to study Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance. For the future I would like to be a mechanic and start my career within the motor industry.
