One of the most compelling aspects of the wine industry is the diversity of roles that it offers. Whether you want to work fully outdoors, fully indoors, or a combination of the two, the wine industry has something for you.  The same applies for people that want a highly technical role, or a fully creative one; wearing jeans and wellies all day, or sophisticated business attire – the wine industry can cater for all of that.  In fact, I can’t think of any other sector with such a wide array of opportunities.  And from whichever other field someone arrives, there will be transferrable skills that can be brought across.  However I’d be remiss not to mention that the one universally required attribute is a capacity for hard work!

I’m incredibly proud to be launching the inaugural National Wine Careers Week – a campaign that shines a spotlight on one of the most exciting and misunderstood industries in the UK. Too often, people think studying wine is simply about developing an appreciation for it, but the reality is so much broader and richer.

The wine industry is a dynamic, global sector offering a vast range of career paths – from viticulture and vineyard management, to oenology, laboratory science, wine buying, marketing, and retail. It's a thriving field that needs passionate, skilled individuals to drive its continued growth and innovation.

By raising awareness of these opportunities, we hope to inspire the next generation to see wine not just as a product, but as a career – one that is as rewarding as it is diverse. National Wine Careers Week is a vital step in supporting the future of this industry.

We’re proud to support National Wine Careers Week – it’s a brilliant way to spotlight the huge variety of roles in this vibrant, global industry, especially to those not yet part of it. This is particularly important as we seek to build a more inclusive and diverse industry. At WSET, we’ve seen our students go on to become everything from sommeliers and winemakers to wine buyers, educators and entrepreneurs. We’re passionate about making drinks education more accessible and affordable, opening up career opportunities for all.
