Plumpton College Agriculture Students Gain Global Insight on Study Trip to Canada
Published on 28 November 2025
00:00 - 00:00Plumpton College’s Level 3 Agriculture students recently returned from an unforgettable eight-day international study trip to Canada, designed to broaden their understanding of global farming practices and modern dairy science.
Exploring Canadian Farming and Culture
The trip began with iconic experiences at the CN Tower and Niagara Falls, giving students a sense of Canada’s scale and natural beauty. These cultural highlights set the stage for the main purpose of the visit: gaining hands-on experience in Canadian agriculture.
Royal Agricultural Winter Fair: A World-Class Event
One of the most exciting parts of the trip was attending the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, one of the largest combined indoor agricultural events in the world. Students joined local farmers in showing Jersey cattle in the main ring, gaining first-hand experience in international showmanship and elite cattle genetics. For many, it was their first time showing cattle, making this a truly educational and inspiring opportunity.
Student Rhianna Tiller shared:
“The trip offered us a unique chance to immerse ourselves in the Canadian dairy industry. We learned from experienced breeders and developed practical skills at a professional level. Jersey Canada partnered with local farmers who kindly provided cows for us to prepare, fit, and show. Even the arable boys loved it!”
Hands-On Learning at Dairy Farms and Research Centres
Beyond the Royal Fair, students visited two traditional dairy farms to compare Canadian systems with UK practices. They also toured the Ontario Dairy Research Centre and the Ontario Veterinary College, deepening their knowledge of modern dairy science and animal health.
“The Royal showed us the scale and professionalism of the event, which was both inspiring and motivating, giving us many opportunities and ideas for the future,” Rhianna added.
Cultural Highlights and Lasting Memories
Outside of agriculture, students explored Toronto’s vibrant cityscape and experienced the breathtaking views from the CN Tower at night. A visit to Niagara Falls was a once-in-a-lifetime moment for many, creating lasting memories alongside their educational experiences.
Plumpton College would like to extend a huge thank you to Jersey Canada for making this incredible opportunity possible and inspiring the next generation of livestock farmers.
