Plumpton College Forestry Department is set to host an exciting evening dedicated to the future of forestry with its “Next Generation Forestry: Meet & Connect”.
This free-to-attend event will be run in collaboration with The Forestry Commission and aims to bring together forestry professionals, students, and enthusiasts for an evening of networking, professional development updates, and discussions on skills pathways in the forestry sector. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with key figures in the industry, including Laurence Bartlam, Steve Fowkes, and Ros Burnley.
The event will also feature insights from the Director at Adrow, Ros Burnley, highlighting current trends and future directions in sustainable forestry management.
The event will take place on Tuesday 24th June 2025 at Plumpton College campus on Ditchling Road (BN7 3AE) from 17:30 to 19:00.
Refreshments will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to reserve their place in advance to ensure availability.
Forestry Works Manager Apprenticeship
Those attending the Next Generation Forestry: Meet and Connect event will be the first to hear an exclusive update around a new apprenticeship programme that is in development within the Forestry & Arboriculture department at Plumpton College.
The new Level 4 apprenticeship aims to train the next generation of forestry leaders: Forestry Works Manager Apprenticeship.
Designed for those ready to take charge of operational forestry activities across public, private, and commercial woodlands, the programme will last roughly 15 months with a 3 month end point assessment period.
Programme Overview
Skills learnt:
- Commission and manage forestry operations
- Ensure safety and environmental compliance
- Lead teams and coordinate contractors
- Manage public safety on active sites
Whether applicants are working for a large forest management company or a small enterprise, this programme prepares graduates to manage operations safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
Who Is It For?
Ideal for current or aspiring professionals in roles such as:
- Forestry Site Manager
- Contracts Supervisor
- Woodland Creation Manager
- Forestry Works Supervisor
- Harvesting and Marketing Manager
- Woodland Project Officer
Apprentices will gain expertise in:
- Tree felling and timber harvesting
- Ground preparation and tree establishment
- Habitat and access management
- Health, safety, and environmental planning
- Coordination of site workers, contractors, and hauliers
- Compliance with UK Forestry Standard and FISA guidelines
Professional Recognition
Upon completion, apprentices will be eligible for the following professional recognition:
- Technical Membership – Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF)
- Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) – Society for the Environment (SocEnv)
