Course Overview

Do you want to access higher education, an apprenticeship, get a promotion at work, apply for a job, or generally improve your maths skills?

If you missed out on gaining your maths qualifications at school, our Maths department here at Plumpton College are providing an excellent opportunity for adults to gain this achievement.

You'll learn from our highly-experienced, expert adult educators. This course is flexible to your availability and requirements with various study options:

  • Start your course in either September or January.
  • Enrol on either the morning course option (10am - 12.30pm) or evening course option (6pm - 8.30pm) at our Plumpton College campus.

Functional Skills is widely recognised and accepted by employers and will help you take the next step in your career journey.

Upon starting this course, you will undergo an initial assessment and consultation with your tutors to decide the best course for you - either Entry Level 3, Level 1, or Level 2 Maths.

Modules

Functional skills qualifications in mathematics assess three interrelated process skills:

  1. representing – selecting the mathematics and information to model a situation
  2. analysing – processing and using mathematics
  3. interpreting – interpreting and communicating the results of the analysis.

The areas you will learn and need to understand, include:

  1. Calculating with money
  2. Working out percentages
  3. Calculating and comparing averages
  4. Drawing graphs and tables
  5. Utilising a scale to help you draw a plan
  6. Reading information from tables and graphs
  7. Using time and distances
  8. Converting between measurements

Assessment

To achieve Functional Skills Maths you need to complete the following components:

  • Non-Calculator Exam
  • Calculator Exam

These exams are externally assessed, and the dates of your exam will be agreed upon with your lecturer.

(Both completed at the same time)

Entry Requirements

  • Aged 19 or older.
  • Do not already hold a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification or a GCSE Grade 4/C and above in mathematics.
