Apprenticeships can be confusing, no matter where you are in your career journey, be that leaving school, changing careers, or looking to upskill. Whilst we are here to assist, these answers to some common questions may help you gain a better understanding of how they work at Plumpton College and how our Talent Bank supports you on your apprenticeship journey.
1. What is an apprenticeship and do I need an employer?
An apprenticeship combines work and study. You’ll need an employer in your chosen sector to undertake one.
- How to find an employer:
- Plumpton College’s Talent Bank can assist you in your search and will be in contact with relevant opportunities.
- Contact local companies directly via phone or email, as many respond well to proactive candidates. You can search for local companies online and AI tools may be able to assist your search.
- Check job boards like Indeed and ask if entry-level or trainee vacancies can be converted into apprenticeships.
We’re always happy to discuss how apprenticeships work with employers should they ask.
2. When do apprenticeships start?
At Plumpton College, apprenticeships start in cohorts throughout the year. Most begin in September/ October and April/ May. You can join late, but usually only within a couple of weeks of the start date.
3. Do I need prior experience?
Not for most apprenticeships (except Level 4 qualifications). However, volunteering or short courses can help you stand out. We may contact you with opportunities to gain relevant skills.
4. What do employers look for?
- Attitude: Passion for the sector and enthusiasm for learning. Avoid vague statements like “I just want to work outdoors.”
- Experience: Reliability and resilience matter. Volunteering, hobbies or previous work experience help showcase this.
- Practicality: Ability to commute is crucial. Many employers prefer candidates who can drive or arrange reliable transport.
5. Do I need Maths and English?
- Aged 16-18: GCSE grade 4 (or Functional Skills Level 2/ equivalents) in Maths and English is required. If you don’t have these, you can study Functional Skills alongside your apprenticeship. We would require at least a grade 1 in GCSE maths and English for Level 2 apprenticeships and a grade 3 or equivalent in maths and English for Level 3 apprenticeships.
- Aged 19+: Maths and English are no longer a requirement.
6. How often will I be at college?
This will depend on your course, but will be either:
- Weekly: One day per week.
- Bi-weekly: Every other week in-person, some courses include online learning for the week not at college.
- Block release: 3 or 5 days in a row, monthly or bi-monthly.
College days run from 9am - 4pm during term time. We have on-site parking or a College Coach network which can transport you to our campus, the coach operates in much of Sussex and some parts of Kent, more information can be found on the Transport section of our website.
7. Where will I work?
Most of your time will be spent with your employer, so finding and choosing one within a realistic commuting distance is essential.
8. How many hours will I work?
At least 30 hours per week, including college time. Most apprenticeships average 40 hours, with a legal maximum of 48 hours for those over 18. However, occasional overtime during busy seasons may occur, e.g. harvest.
9. What is the apprenticeship wage?
The minimum wage for apprentices is £7.55, but many employers pay more, often matching age-related minimum wage or higher. You’ll also be paid for college learning time.
10. What is the typical age of an apprentice?
Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged over 16 and who have completed their final academic year of secondary school. The average apprentice age in the UK is 29. The average age of our apprentices is 24, and our oldest apprentices are in their 60s!
