IT access for study

In these uncertain times, and to ensure the health and safety of everyone at the college, we are now requiring students to have a laptop on a 1-to-1 basis to facilitate flexible learning.

The College is moving towards a more mobile, cloud-first strategy and gradually reducing its reliance on desktop computers and allowing students to work from anywhere, on any device, at anytime.

What device will I need?

We would recommend that you purchase and use your own device at college

All modern mobiles, tablets, Chromebooks and laptops will be compatible with the systems we use at college. However, for the best experience, and maximum compatibility, we recommend a modern Windows 10 laptop.

If you’re struggling to find a good machine, we’ve had a look on the market for something that might be suitable. We highly recommend Dell laptops due to industry leading quality control and reliability.

You can access the College’s Office 365 services on any device connected to the internet or through mobile apps available for Android or iOS stores (app stores).

We would recommend that your laptop would have the following as a minimum:

  • A multi-core processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • SSD hard drive storage
  • Wi-Fi
  • Windows 10 Home or better

What else do I need?

To engage in learning activities, you will need a headset and microphone. Some laptops have these built-in so it’s worth checking the laptop specification before purchasing additional equipment.

The following would be suitable for most use case scenarios if you do not have a built-in cameras or microphones.

What Software will be supplied?

The college will supply the Office 365 package free for up to 5 devices that you own.

This package comprises of; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams. You can install this on your laptop or smart device

You also have the option of obtaining a free copy of Windows 10 Education from plumpton.onthehub.com

Our IT Team will be providing plenty of video tutorials so that you are fully aware and familiar of our systems before you begin in September. 

 

Other important software

Sophos Home – free anti-virus product for Windows devices (includes parental website filtering).

 

What if I can't bring my own device to College?

We recognise that not all of our students will have access to a laptop or device and if you meet certain criteria, we will be able to supply a laptop from our loan pool or purchase a device via our bursary scheme.

Modern devices have a range of accessibility options, however there might be a requirement for specialist software or hardware to help you with your digital studies.
