Description

Muddy Trowel started during the pandemic when Steve (our founder) discovered lockdown's impact on the horticultural industry while recovering from COVID-19 himself. Two weeks later, with help from old friends and colleagues, Muddy Trowel was born. Traditionally, gardening has been stuffy and impenetrable — 'rhizomatous perennial' anyone? Our mission is to democratise growing. We believe anyone should be able to create their own oasis, no green fingers required. In November 2021, we raised a £1m seed round led by Evergreen (owners of MiracleGro) and are backed by some of Europe's best angel investors. Since launch, we've delivered joy to thousands of customers across London and the South East, and are looking to increase that by 5-fold this year with our ambitious growth plans!

About the role

In this role you would be right at the heart of Muddy Trowel’s operations - based at our site where all of our plants live and we put together our customers’ orders. This is a role for someone who doesn’t want to spend all day sat in front of a computer screen, and would rather be active - rolling their sleeves up to get involved in a variety of tasks!

You will report into our Head of Operations, but will work closely with both the Operations and Plants team at Muddy Trowel. Your key responsibilities would revolve around ensuring our production is running efficiently and the products going out to customers are of the highest standard. This will involve a range of duties, from picking and preparing customer orders and coaching others in the on-site team to ensure they are working efficiently, through to visiting our suppliers to inspect and pick-up plant stock, managing the re-orders of various items, and constantly improving our operational processes. You don’t need to have any pre-existing knowledge of plants and horticulture (although this would be a bonus!) but you must be interested and willing to learn the basics.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to understand what it is like to work in a fast-paced startup environment and is keen to gain experience working in operations for a consumer business.

Core duties (include but are not limited to):

  • Daily preparation of customer orders and quality checking to ensure everything is up to the highest standards for customers.

  • Coaching and training of others in the on-site team (when required) to ensure work is efficient and correct.

  • Driving our van to visit suppliers, pick up plant stock and checking inbound deliveries to site.

  • Maintaining an organised workplace and working with the operations team to consistently identify areas of improvement and ways to make our processes better.

  • Assisting with other operations and plants tasks when required, such as stock re-orders, planning inbound deliveries from nurseries, and occasionally making deliveries to customers.

Skills and attributes

  • Highly organised - This role requires a high level of organisation as you will be planning for hundreds of customer orders every week and we cannot let any customer down.

  • Excellent attention to detail and well-prioritised - you can handle tasks in real-time and manage a fluctuating workload.

  • Dynamic - you are flexible to changing priorities and willing to muck in for a fast-growing business.

  • Full driving license with no endorsements - you will be required from time to time to drive our van either for stock pick-ups or deliveries.

About you

  • You have a strong connection to the MT brand values: simple, sustainable, joyful.

  • Ideal candidates will have an interest in plants and horticulture, or at least be willing to learn the basics!
