Plumpton College are delighted to announce they have won a Silver Medal in the world’s most prestigious sparkling wine competition.
Plumpton Estate NV Brut Rosé, is one of only 128 Gold & 237 Silver Medals that have been awarded in what has been a record-breaking year for entries. With over 1,000 entries from up to 30 different countries, Plumpton won this accolade along with a handful of other English sparkling producers. A total of 10 gold and 21 silver medals were awarded this year to English sparkling wine producers.

“We are over the moon to win a Silver Medal for our Plumpton Estate Brut Rosé. We work extremely hard every year to ensure quality and consistency are delivered in all our wines.
However, the key difference with our wines, is that the vine-growing and winemaking is carried out almost entirely by our undergraduate students. You can almost taste their enthusiasm for tending the vines, managing the fermentations and agreeing the blends! I am very proud of all our students.”
The Plumpton Estate NV Rosé is a traditional-method sparkling wines made from 100% Pinot Noir, grown entirely at Plumpton College in East Sussex.
The College vineyards are located near Haywards Heath in the heart of Sussex, and, thanks to their exceptional site and the loving care that they receive, produce outstanding wines.
All the wines submitted for the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championship (CSWWC) are judged blind exclusively by three internationally renowned fizz experts, Tom Stevenson, Essi Avellan MW and Simon Stockton and according to the judges 2020 has been the toughest judging yet with the quality and diversity of sparkling wine improving year on year.
Tom Stevenson, Founder and Chairman of the CSWWC, commented
“This year was always going to be memorable for obvious reasons, yet, despite the global pandemic, we attracted a record-breaking number of entries".
"For the first 5 years of the CSWWC's existence, it cruised along at approximately 650 entries per year. This was fine by me, as we encouraged producers to focus their entries, thus although we expanded in terms of producers entering, the number of wines being submitted stood still. In 2019 the number of entries increased by more than 30% to 850, while in 2020 it shot up further to 1,073 entries, including no less than 180 in magnum.
So this year of all years, we had to cope with an unprecedented volume of wines to process and judge, but CSWWC became the competition that Covid could not stop. To ensure the safety of the entire team, including Sensible Wine Service, our logistics partner, we all went through three Covid tests to form a secure bubble. If anyone wanted to leave, they knew they would not be allowed back in. We even had our own live-in Michelin chef and a private pub. No one wanted to leave!"
