St Bede's School is looking for a motivated, enthusiastic person to join the Grounds team as an apprentice. The role will involve all aspects of grounds maintenance - from sports pitches to herbaceous borders.

Vacancy description

  • Grounds and sports maintenance: To provide an outstanding maintenance service to the school by assisting with planned grounds work tasks and repairs, primarily but not exclusively in area of specialism (tree work, hard landscaping, grounds work, paving, brick pathways/garden walls, pitch preparation) in a time and cost effective way, which will enable the school to continue to operate safely and with minimum disruption to the educational delivery
  • Pitch Preparation: To assist with checking and preparing the pitches for matches, ensuring the appropriate nets and flags are in place and at the of the match to ensure the pitches are cleared and equipment cleaned and stored in order that the pitches are of a class standard and matches can start on time
  • Recycling/litter management: To be part of the recycling/litter rota, reporting any untoward or inappropriate incidents, in order to ensure the maximum amount of cardboard is collected and prepared for recycling and that the extended site is clear of litter and presents an image of being well cared for and high standards can be maintained.
  • Emergency response working: To work as part of a team responding to any given situation within the normal working day
  • Work Equipment, material and standards: To assist with  the cleaning, maintenance and storage of all allocated equipment, ensuring that appropriate, well maintained and properly serviced equipment is used at all times, which will in turn help to ensure budgets are effectively managed and kept within the department budget
  • General Estates Areas: To undertake work on the Estates woodlands and paths, including basic tree works to ensure that all woodlands and paths are properly managed
  • Health & Safety: To undertake all allocated works in accordance with both Trust H&S policies and procedures and also the H&S practices associated with COSHH and area of specialism; to be vigilant and alert to any of potential risk on the site, rectifying if within scope of accountability or reporting as appropriate in order to ensure safe working practices and a safe site
  • Administration and Records: To assist with completing all required records and systems and keep documentation to ensure there are clear logs of all jobs undertaken
  • Gardening: Works with all types of bedding plants including working in greenhouses, pruning, weeding and watering
  • Machinery Use: All machinery when being used is the responsibility of the operator. Grounds mechanic will give instruction and assist with required operator’s maintenance. Check sheets and defect reports are to be completed

The job will entail physical work and working outside in all weathers
