Description

The Volunteer Role

We’re looking for up to seven capable and proactive volunteers to join SDP’s own terrestrial conservation project, the Shoreham Port Conservation Corridor (SPCC). The SPCC is a unique project site, nestled in the industrialised area of Shoreham Port, and bordered by housing, making it an isolated and important first land-fall for migratory butterfly species such as clouded yellow, long-tailed blue and many others. This isolated area hosts a surprising number of habitat types, and our goal is to enhance these to increase biodiversity in this urbanised landscape. The ranger role is highly variable, requiring physical land management tasks and desk-based elements to bring about real restoration and conservation work.

We are looking for volunteers to implement, co-ordinate and maintain the work programme committing up to 2 days a week, a Wednesday and the occasional weekend. We will look for up to 7 candidates to share the responsibilities and pull together the project to deliver the SPCC commitments.

Role Duties

- Carrying out labour tasks of land management using manual tools.

- Implementing and updating the programme of work in accordance with nature’s requirements, and those of SDP.

- Running surveying and public events within the SPCC.

Requirements

- Some experience working with basic gardening equipment.

- Flexible, adaptable and proactive to work around changes in weather conditions, volunteer groups and the needs of the environment on site.

- General understanding of habitat restoration, or willingness to learn.

- Practical and helpful attitude and skills for working on a range of tasks and being on hand around the SDP office.

Desirable

- General or local understanding of species ecology.

- Ability to understand species interactions to represent or enhance lost species.

- Use and certification for use of power licensed equipment such as brushcutter, hedge trimmer.
