Even in a great year like 2018, powdery mildew remained a key problem in some UK vineyards. This need not happen: with a clear up-to-date knowledge and understanding, UK growers can control this disease, whilst reducing their costs and environmental impact.
Dr Moustafa Selim, from Geisenheim University, is a world expert on grapevine protection. He has a degree in horticulture/genetics, an MSc in molecular plant breeding and a PhD in molecular plant pathology (Giessen University, Germany). Since 2013, he has worked at Geisenheim University in the Department of Plant Protection, teaching modules on diseases and pests, not just at Geisenheim, but also at Montpellier SupAgro, and is an expert on the effect of climate change on vine diseases. He presented at the ICCWS2016 and at last November's Wine GB Viticulture Technical Conference.
