Course Description

If you want a career in vinegrowing, this is the course for you. The English wine industry is going from strength to strength, and is actively seeking staff to establish and manage its vineyards.

This programme will provide you with the core practical skills and knowledge that you will need to succeed in finding employment, or further learning and training, within vineyards, both in England and abroad. There is also the opportunity to progress on to the Plumpton College Foundation Degree in Wine Production if the entry requirements are met.

Course content

 You will learn:

  • How to work safely
  • Tractor driving, and the use of other vineyard machinery
  • The fundamentals of plant biology and protection from pests and diseases
  • Key vineyard operations, such as pruning, trellising and harvesting.

There is a work-placement requirement, which you can complete in local vineyards.

Additional qualifications:

There is opportunity to study for a range of NPTC Pesticide Application certificates along with brush cutter and forklift truck operators certificate.

Entry Requirements:

Either:

  • You'll need to have achieved 4 or more GCSEs between grade 9-4 (previous grade structure A-C) including English, Maths and a Science
  • Successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification at Merit or above
  • Mature students without the above requirements will be considered.

This is a full time course over 1 year

2 days tuition a week and you will take part in work experience.

Plumpton College is the UK’s centre of excellence in wine education, training and research. With our 10-hectare commercial vineyard and winery, you’ll be offered plenty of opportunities to learn practical skills, as well as the essential theory of vinegrowing.

Future Opportunities

Plumpton also has very strong links with the English wine industry, and will help you find a work placement during your course. The UK wine industry is growing fast so there are plenty of good opportunities for graduates to gain employment. We are also in contact with our graduates all over the world, including France, Canada, Australia, California, New Zealand and South Africa.
