Course Overview
This course builds on the Principles of Winemaking course and is ideal for those with experience of winemaking, Cellar Hands who are interested in learning more about this important stage of wine production or wine enthusiasts who want to learn more about this subject.
The aims of this one-day intensive course:
- To provide a good level of knowledge and understanding of the various considerations when selecting packaging for wine and the logistics for bottling, including sustainability and packaging lifecycles.
- To help students to evaluate the different vessels and closures that are available and how these can influence the maturation of the product.
- To learn about the legal and food safety aspects of packaging wine.
Modules
Topics include:
- Selecting packaging that will maintain the wine style and quality
- Different options for packaging wine
- Closures and how the selection of closure can affect maturation
- Technical challenges in packaging
- Labelling and regulations
- Food Safety regulations and accreditation options
- Packaging regulation including Extended Producer Responsibilities
Assessment
The course ends with a 30-minute multiple-choice exam.
Entry Requirements
There will be an assumed level of knowledge and prior experience of winemaking. Winemakers, Cellar Hands, Production Managers and Operatives and Wine Marketing Mangers would benefit from this course.

Please note Plumpton College Wine Division have recently secured some funding, allowing for a reduction in price to a selection of wine courses, subject to eligibility*.
*Learners will be eligible for funding if they were aged over 19 on 31st August 2024 and have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years. Learners living in devolved areas (eg Greater London Combined Authority) will not be eligible for funding. Learners currently undertaking an apprenticeship will not be eligible for funding.
