This viticulture workshop explores the key requirements for establishing a commercially viable vineyard, thus enabling you to get your vineyard off to a good start.

Delegates will investigate and evaluate all the steps necessary for a successful vineyard planting operation. These include vineyard planning, preparing the ground, planting the vines, and looking after them for the first few years of their lives.

This course is useful for vineyard managers and senior vineyard staff as well as people interested in this key area of vineyard science.

Course Description

  • Vineyard planning
  • Preparing the site, including:
  • Levelling
  • Drainage
  • Pre-planting fertilisation
  • Cultivation
  • The planting operation: hand or machine?
  • Looking after the plantation in the first few years, including:
  • Tree tubes
  • Polythene mulching
  • Pruning

Equipment Required: This session will also include a site visit, so students are advised to wear suitable footwear, and outdoor and all-weather clothing

Entry Requirements:

WineSkills workshops are best suited for people who have completed the Principles of Vinegrowing programme and/or have some commercial vineyard experience.
