Plant production is the art, science and business of producing plants. It is a vast industry that has many aspects that appeal to people who love understanding how plants grow and how the growing industry works. What plants do people want? What is involved in growing plants effectively and sustainably? What is the best way to earn money from growing and selling plants?
This course will focus on the areas involved in producing plants and the different ways in which this can be achieved. It will also look at the dispatch side of the industry and the retail sector that make this such a fast paced and interesting career choice.
The units will be:
Plant identification and nomenclature in horticulture
Plant nutrition and monitoring systems through irrigation and hydroponics
Plant protection, integrated pest management and bio-security
Horticultural mechanics and micro prop industry methods
Organise the preparation and establishment of propagation materials
Food crop production and time management
Ornamental plant production and customer demand – Retail nursery experience
Estimate resource requirements for stock control and delivery.
Retail skills, plant display systems and the psychology of selling
