RHS qualifications are intended for those wishing to work in professional horticulture in a variety of roles. They are suitable for those wishing to enter horticultural employment for the first time; for those who are already working in horticulture who want to develop their skills; and for those who wish to progress to further horticultural study at level 3. It is also suitable for those who wish to enter horticulture as a change of career and are seeking the necessary foundation skills.

RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture provides a broad knowledge of the theories which support horticultural techniques.

These theory based qualifications provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles that underpin professional practices.

This combined qualification includes both the Certificate in Plant Growth, Propagation and Development and the Certificate in Garden planning, Establishment and Maintenance.

Each unit is assessed by a written examination at year end.

Topics include Plant botany and physiology; Soil science; Plant health; Propagation; Garden planning; Plant selection, establishment and maintenance; Vegetable and fruit production and the use of Protected environments.

Entry Requirements:

There is no requirement for previous knowledge or experience needed for entry to the qualifications, although a keen interest and enthusiasm is, of course, key to success.

Time: 9:15 - 16:15 or 18.00- 20.30

Campus: Stanmer 


Daytime: 1 day per week for 1 year 

Evening: 1 evening a week for 2 years

We’ve got an excellent large area under glass where you’ll be able to grow plants without the risk of the weather, up to a commercial level.

You’ll be able to develop your brickwork skills and paving at our large landscaping centre.
