This new qualification provides the standard for a 21st Century Manager. The wide range of subjects studied will provide a comprehensive knowledge base supported by a proven record of skills and should help improve career options and succession planning.

A 36-month higher programme including the new ILM L5 Diploma for Leaders and Managers. Ideal for individuals who manage teams or projects or are responsible for achieving operational or departmental goals and strategic objectives.

 For managers responsible for everything from

  • Creating and delivering operational plans
  • Managing projects, and leading and managing teams
  • Managing change
  • Financial and resource management.
  • Responsibilities also include talent management, coaching and mentoring.

Roles may include those of Operations Manager, Regional Manager, Divisional Manager, Department Manager as well as other specialist managers.  

Option of College attendance and scheduled work place visits is over a 30-month period plus tutorials and assessment by appointment. A choice of study options are available including Block release. Includes ILM registration and certification fees.

What will I study?

There are Seventeen mandatory units including Knowledge units (theory) and Skills units (application) for:

  • Leading People
  • Managing People
  • Building Relationships
  • Communication Operational Management
  • Project Management
  • Finance
  • In addition, three combined units (personal effectiveness): Self-awareness Management of Self Problem Solving and Decision Making.

The above have been designed by the ILM to meet the criteria set out in the new apprenticeship standard.

How will I be taught?

Plumpton college lecturers will be teaching their subject specialisms via face-to-face classroom delivery, on-line and with an active learning group work throughout the course. Support will be provided by 1-2-1 tutorials with the Programme manager and the designated Lecturer trainer.

How will I be assessed?

The criteria for completing the Diploma for Leaders and Managers is scenario based assignments for four units, an on line portfolio of evidence for the remaining units plus a Professional Discussion. The student will be prepared for the End Point Assessment in conjunction with their employer.

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of five GCSEs, at C grade or above including English and maths. Acceptance onto this course is via an interview with the ILM programme manager. You will be invited to bring your CV and a 500 word personal statement of why you wish to study for a management qualification at this time.

You will need an employer who would like to take you on as an apprentice. If you haven't found a suitable employer, we will be able to assist you in finding employment. 

You will also attend college for a minimum number of set hours each week. 


The duration of this programme is 36 months.


Non-levy paying employers will share the cost of training and assessing their apprentices with government - this is called ‘co-investment’.

From May 2017, you will pay 10% towards to the cost of apprenticeship training and government will pay the rest (90%), up to the funding band maximum.

Level 2 is perfect for you if you are a team leader or potential team leader who needs a solid foundation in management skills. If you are a current team leader, it will help you be more confident in your role. If you are currently part of a team, it will help you make the transition from team member to team leader.

Level 3 is the right choice if you have some management experience as a team leader or first line manager. It will take you from potential management material to respected and efficient leader and help you rise in the ranks.

Level 5 is perfect if you are a middle manager, such as an operations/project manager or department head. It will give you the knowledge and skills you need to take on a senior management role and progress in your career. 

What are Awards –Certificates - Diplomas?

Awards are bite-sized qualifications, which will give you in-depth knowledge of a specific, narrow subject area. 

Certificates are medium-scope qualifications, which cover essential subject areas in detail.

Diplomas are a full sized qualification, which cover substantial subject areas in detail
