This course is equivalent to A Levels and is designed for those who wish to work in supervisory roles in the equine industry or progress to Higher Education. Each course offers opportunities to develop practical and supervisory skills in addition to the scientific theory of equine management.
Level 3 courses offered:
Routine duties on a rota basis, including weekends, are an essential part of the programme. This will involve working on the equine unit doing early morning practical duties before the normal timetabled day begins. It is a requirement to spend time working in the industry, as part of the course. You will have the opportunity if you wish to be involved in the College Horse Show Team.

All students aged 16-18 on our Level 2 & Level 3 programmes will now have to take part in an exciting and compulsory 50-day industry placement programme alongside completion of their vocational course. The programme will give you the chance to gain valuable skills in a real working environment whilst being paired with your ideal employer.
Our mission is to pair students with their ideal employer and to support them continuously during the placement.

I chose my course as I felt i would be the best course to suit my needs, both from a learning point of view and practically. The practical skills I've gained at Plumpton have really boosted my confidence around horses.
The large equine unit is a BHS approved centre and consists of two well equipped yards, a traditional yard of 20 boxes and an 'American Barn' designed yard with 40 boxes.
The extensive College estate is ideal for hacking out.
This programme is designed for those who are looking for a career and responsibility in the equine industry, or as a route to Higher Education.
The aim of this unit is to give you the skills needed to identify, participate in and review work experience in the equine industry. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your personal experience and identify further training needs and possible employment opportunities.
On completion of the unit you should understand the opportunities in the environmental and land-based industries, be able to prepare and review for a work-based experience in the environmental and land-based industry.
This unit aims to provide you with an understanding on the principles of ground schooling horses and how these can be applied in practice. The unit will investigate a range of techniques, including lungeing, long reining and loose schooling. You will show an ability to lunge and long rein a variety of trained horses in a school environment to industry standards.
On completion of the unit you should understand approaches to training horses from the ground, be able to exercise horses on the lunge as well as long rein horses. You should also be able to assess horses being worked from the ground.
The aim of this unit is to develop the your knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of cells and tissues and their relationship with body systems. You will also develop an understanding of the structure and function of skeletal systems and sensory organs and how these have been adapted to meet the needs of animals living in different environments. You will be introduced to important aspects of cell biology and will discover the functions of the main organelles within the cell. You will also be introduced to the processes of cell division by mitosis and meiosis, and learn how the structure of cells relate to their functions in the animal body.
On completion of this unit you should know the functions of the main animal cell organelles, understand the structure and function of the main animal tissue types, animal skeletal systems and sensory organs in animals.
This unit focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of horse behaviour and welfare of horses, through investigating natural behaviour and lifestyles resulting from the evolutionary process, and comparing this to the typical, traditional management systems. You will analyse the associated effects of domestication, including stereotypic behaviours. Alternative contemporary methods of managing and keeping horses are reviewed and the role these methods might play on the horse's wellbeing.
This unit aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles of animal feeding and how these can be applied in practice. It will also focus on feeding animals which is a vital husbandry skill when caring for all types of animals. You will develop the skills needed to provide food to animals safely, in a way that adheres to animal welfare and health and safety requirements.
On completion of this unit you should be able to plan diets and feeding regimes for animals, be able to monitor the feeding of animals and understand the planning and monitoring of animal feeding regimes.
This unit aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles of stable yard management and how these can be applied in practice. This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to maintain a stable and yard and care for horses safely, efficiently and effectively.
On completion of this unit you should be able to plan, carry out, monitor and maintain daily routines. You will also be able to undertake horse care tasks to maintain the health of horses and understand the requirements for stables and grass-kept horses. Ultimately you will be able to work safely around horses.
This unit gives an overview of some of the main anatomical and physiological systems, their regulation, control, and how these systems have adapted to the animal's environment. This first part of the unit covers the main body systems, organ structure and function, and hormonal control of reproduction. The second part of the unit covers biological mechanisms. The final part of the unit you will examine the adaptation of the body structure and systems to the animal's environment.
On completion of this unit you will know the structure and function of biological systems and animals reproductive processes. You will understand the biological control mechanisms in animals and how an animals body structure and systems adapt to its environment.
Within this unit you will be able to demonstrate a safe riding technique on the flat. You will be given the opportunity to ride with an independent seat on a variety of trained horses in a school environment to an acceptable industry standard. You will also be able to demonstrate a safe riding technique whilst carrying out gymnastic jumping exercises and over a small course of fences
This unit will give you an understanding of how and why theory is fundamental to riding horses and examines methods used for training a variety of horses. You will have the chance to identify and investigate the equipment, techniques and programmes used to introduce young horses to training and to develop or rehabilitate horses.
On completion on this unit you should understand the correct procedures for training horses from the ground, flat and over fences.
You will focus on the physiological effects of fitness and training on the horse's system. The different physiological systems are considered within the context of the horse's stress and metabolic responses to fittening. You will also examine the practical requirements of early fitness preparations, including the need for preventative healthcare and fitness programmes required for an event.
On completion of this unit you should understand physiological effects of fittening on the systems of the horse and the requirements of horse fitness preparation. You will also be able to plan horse fitness programmes and monitor horse fitness.
This unit provides the knowledge and skills required to work in the competition industry and you will investigate pre-event preparations and the competition season. The formalities and registration needed to enter a horse in a competition will be explored as well as the related preparation standards for the horse rider. You will cover post-competition care for the horse and consider the immediate requirements of the horse and the importance of after care.
On completion of this unit you should know how to undertake pre-competition preparations and be able to prepare horse and rider for competition activities. Also you will be able to care for a horse at competitions and provide post-competition care and exercise.
This unit will develop your understanding of common sites and types on performance injuries and their causes and effects, relating them to different disciplines. You will develop an understanding of the associated diagnostic, therapeutic techniques and their uses and effects.
On completion of this unit you should understand the nature of horse performance injuries, the requirements and effective use of therapeutic and diagnostic techniques. You will also know equine rehabilitation techniques used to improve performance, including complimentary therapies. Finally you will know the laws and regulations relating to equine rehabilitation.
You will be able to describe the main components of an animal's diet and understand the requirements of a balanced diet. The focus of this unit is on the main components of animal feeds and learners will examine the source, structure and function of the major nutrients, as well as their nutritional value and the detrimental effects of dietary imbalances.
On completion of this unit you should understand the functions of the main components of an animal's diet, the nutritional value and properties of different food types. You will also understand the feeding requirements of animals to ensure they receive a balanced diet and know common animal nutritional problems.
This unit aims to introduce you to the skills and knowledge needed in equine event management and how these can be applied in practice. This unit covers the detailed and different aspects of planning, running and assessing equine events.
On completion of this unit you should know the regulatory framework relevant to equine event managements. You will also be able to apply business management skills, taking part and running an equine event. Finally you will be able to evaluate the success of an equine event.
You will develop skills in the working horses on the flat and using training exercises to improve flatwork. You will also develop their ability to ride a variety of horses on the flat to maintain and improve their way of going, to acceptable industry standards. You will be able to assess a horse's strengths and weakness, select and use suitable exercises and assess their effectiveness.
One completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate a correct riding position on and being able to work a horse on the flat. You will also be able to use training exercises to improve flatwork and know how to assess a horse on the flat.
You will review techniques for riding horses over fences and ensuring an effective jumping position. You will identify the safety considerations for horse and rider when jumping, a correct approach, landing and getaway for different types of fences. In addition distances of show jumps and crosscountry fences.
On completion of this unit you should be able to ride a horse through a jumping grid, over fences and over cross country fences. Finally you should understand effective jumping techniques.
You will discover the range of the businesses directly involved in producing goods or providing services, and ancillary businesses and organisations that support the industry. You will then explore how a range of physical and human resources are necessary for successful business operation and how their management can result in improved business performance.
On completion of this unit you should know the breadth and importance of an industry in the environmental and land-based sector. You will understand business resources, structures, marketplace and how to use financial and physical record keeping systems.
You will explore the topic areas that interest you and are relevant to your career options. You will reduce these to one topic area that will form the cornerstone of your investigative project and you will research your chosen topic area and produce a breakdown of resources and project action plan.
On completion of this unit a you should be able to identify, research, plan, execute and report on a suitable topic for an investigative project in the environmental and land-based sector.
This unit focuses on developing and enhancing your underpinning knowledge of sound instructing/coaching skills with practical sessions which allows you to reflect on your own performance. You will develop your teaching ability by conducting riding lessons on the flat and over ground poles. In addition to a lead rein, lunge lesson, and delivering a short lecture.
On completion of this unit you should be able to prepare lessons plans and be able to teach and evaluate riding lessons, lead-rein and lung lesson. Finally you should be able to deliver a short lecture.
