This advanced level course helps you to handle complex issues that happen in rural areas due to tourism and development of the countryside. It’ll give you a great understanding of scientific principles faced within the countryside industry.

You’ll find this course really interesting, enjoying a mix of coursework and practical hands-on sessions within our excellent site at Plumpton. You’ll be able to add knowledge of the necessary principles and legislation required to your list of abilities.

The countryside sector needs people who understand both the science and the practicalities required to manage the many conflicting demands on rural areas. This course aims to prepare you for the task of successful countryside management.

Through coursework and industry experience, supported by one of the countryside organisations, you will gain an understanding of scientific principles, legislation and practical skills that are needed for employment or progression to higher education.

Work Experience

Study programmes include a minimum of compulsory work experience hours achieved through one day a week or block placements. The amount of hours required is dependent on the study programme.

Industry Work Placement

All students aged 16-18 on our Level 2 & Level 3 programmes will now have to take part in an exciting and compulsory 50-day industry placement programme alongside completion of their vocational course. The programme will give you the chance to gain valuable skills in a real working environment whilst being paired with your ideal employer.

Our mission is to pair students with their ideal employer and to support them continuously during the placement.

There is flexibility on how students complete the placement; it can be during non-college weekdays, weekends, in blocks or over the holiday period. Qualifications Gained

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land & Wildlife (Countryside)
  • Plumpton College Certificate
  • College award, Functional Skills or GCSEs in English and Maths
Entry Requirements:
  • You’ll need to have achieved 4 GCSEs between Grade 9-4 (previous grade structure A-C) including English, Maths and a Science
  • Successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification

Mature students without the above requirements will be considered

Duration:

Between 2 and 4 days per week depending on the level studied. 

I've always been interested in wildlife and spending time at Plumpton has meant that I have been able to take part in work experience with Natural England on a nearby nature reserve.

Future Opportunities

Following satisfactory completion of the programme, students may progress on to the Foundation Degree in Countryside Management or work in a countryside related organisation.

  • Employment as ranger or estates officer with one of the many wildlife charities such as RSPB, Wildlife Trust or with the National Trust.
  • Self-employed gardening, woodland management, green wood products craftsman.
  • Self-employed interpretation facilitator taking clients on guided walks, species ID courses and bushcraft.
  • Seasonal short-term contracts in habitat conservation.
