BHS Stage 1 Care and Ride
Preparation for Exam
BHS Stage 1 Care will provide you with an understanding of the responsibilities of working safely on a stable yard with empathy towards both horses and colleagues.
The award assesses your knowledge and practical skills when carrying out routine tasks, such as mucking out, bedding down and providing food and water. You will be asked to handle horses inside the stable and outdoors, apply and remove rugs, groom, lead a horse in hand and hold a horse for inspection.
It covers routine tasks, such as:
- Mucking out,
- Grooming,
- Tack cleaning and handling horses safely amongst others.
It will provide learners with the basic knowledge and skills to ride horses on both reins at:
- Walk
- Trot
- Canter
And also to ride in balance, in a group and within a school environment.
You will develop an understanding of riding position and have an awareness of your own horse’s needs.
These courses run for 6 weeks.

Entry Requirements
You must be 13 years or older
Equipment required:
- Polo Shirt
- Jodhpurs
- Short boots and chaps/gaiters
- Long riding boots
- Gloves
- Fitted riding hat with BSI Kitemark and at current standard - VG1 01.040 (2014-12), PAS 015 (1998 or 2011), SNELL E2001 or SNELL E2016
- A short riding whip
Items not to wear
- Any clothing with a hood
- Any jewellery (all must be removed to ride)
