Exploring the theory and practice of outdoor adventurous activities, you'll be focusing on developing creative, safe delivery and management of the educational potential of these exciting pursuits. This course is unique to Plumpton; giving you invaluable academic knowledge of this challenging sector, while giving you hands-on experience during adventures across the UK. 

What does the course cover?

Studying over three years full-time, although you can also choose to study part-time, you'll get to cover a wide variety of theoretical aspects in a series of modules that cover both the adventurous activities provision and education management in the outdoor sector. You'll get to spend time enjoying mountaineering and water activities, plus a variety of other exciting adventurous activities. You'll also build your knowledge of relevant education management theory, and health and safety philosophies, procedures and legislation. 

Developing a broad knowledge of the subject, you can look forward to modules that include exploring creative programme design and management, environmental sustainability, ethics and practical application of adventure media. You'll be able to tailor the programme to match your chosen career path so you could choose to study biomechanics and psychology or adventurous activity, and the impact of health and well-being agendas. You'll also be encouraged to choose an optional work placement which will give you the opportunity to experience best practice and current approaches at first hand.

Facilities

We've got the perfect location if you're looking to challenge yourself in this exciting area. With a superb range of facilities, we have lots of excellent equipment for you to enjoy and experience throughout your course. 

Facilities Our large sports hall at Plumpton is a great venue for a variety of sporting activities. It's also the location for our fantastic indoor climbing wall. Conveniently situated within the extensive Plumpton estate, you'll be able to enjoy all of our land-based and water activities both during your studies and enrichment activities too. You'll be able to challenge yourself and enjoy our extensive range of oudorr equipment including canoes, climbing equipment, kayaks and mountain bikes. Plumpton is also a great place for you to take part in outdoor activities such as camping, navigating and sailing.

Watersports: If watersports is your passion, we have a sailing and watersports academy, run in partnership with a sailing club. The perfect opportunity for you to try out new water-based activities as well as improving our current skills, you'll be able to develop everything you need to become an instructor. It's the ideal location for you to gain experience in the marine and river environment. 

Residential Centre: We're very proud of our residential centre in North Wales, at the foot of Mount Snowdon. From here, you'll be able to experience a huge range of adventurous and outdoor activities such as mountain biking, mountaineering, multi-pitch climbing and white water paddlesport.

Future Opportunities

You've got loads of choices as a graduate from this course. Many graduates start as outdoor education facilitators at outdoor education centres or commercial adventure providers and look to go on to management positions. Alternatively, you can choose to take your skills further afield by leading expeditions or taking a planning and co-ordination ole at an overseas expedition company. Other graduates have chosen to work at schools; co-ordinating outdoor education activities and managing Duke of Edinburgh schemes and trips abroad. 

You could also look to move into environmental education, or working for charitable, commercial and public sector environmental education organisations. Many of our students decide to work aboard. In the past, graduates of our programmes have worked at ski resorts in Canada and the Alps, been river guides in central Africa, and worked for outdoor educations companies in Australia. Or you might choose to continue your studies - to Master's degree or PhD level, or top up with a PGCE to begin your teaching career.
