Environmental Conservation Apprenticeship/Environmental Conservation NVQ Level 2

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION NVQ LEVEL 2 – 2009/10
This one day per week course is designed for learners both employed and volunteers who wish to gain practical experience in countryside related skills and is essential for Rangers, Wardens and Conservation Professionals. It is run on a Roll-On-Roll-Off programme, which means you can start at the beginning of any term.

Applicants wishing to achieve this award must be working in a relevant placement for a minimum of 16 hours per week.

BTCV NVQ Level 2 Environmental Conservation
This course is delivered by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) in partnership with Plumpton College. It follows on from the Level 1 Land Based Operations. The course will develop your practical skills in environmental conservation and you will also be able to train for industry “competence tickets”, for example chipper, brushcutter, chainsaw or climbing. On successful completion of the course, you will gain:
- NVQ Level 2 in Environmental Conservation
- Creative Craft Certificate Level 1 or 2
- Health and Safety Level 2
There will also be opportunities for training in starting up your own business or preparing for employment. Courses are run in the Hastings area. This course is open to everyone (minimum age 18), but a commitment to complete the NVQ is required.

This work-based course of study will give you the knowledge and skills required to work in the industry whilst gaining experience of gamekeeping. No formal qualifications are required . DIPLOMA IN WORK BASED FLORISTRY
This day release course is designed for those employed in the floristry industry. The programme will equip you with a wide range of floristry skills including presentation and display, sympathy and basic wedding floristry, plant and flower care. You will study the art of merchandise display, customer service and safety in the workplace. Most of the course assessment will be carried out in the workplace itself. A ‘starter kit’ of floristry equipment will be provided but this does not include flowers or sundries unless you are on an apprenticeship. If either you or your employer are funding the course, flowers and sundries will cost between £10 and £30 per week. A camera is essential to record your work. Evidence of the course is built into a portfolio.

WORK BASED DIPLOMA IN FLORISTRY LEVEL 3
This day release course will provide you with the ‘next step’ in your floristry career. You need to have either completed NVQ Level 2 Floristry or be able to prove relevant experience in the industry. You also need to be working at a supervisory level. The course will develop your level 2 practical skills to a more advanced standard. Topics covered include: beautiful advanced wedding and funeral designs together with European design and large scale projects including team work. You will need to be assessed in the workplace; some practical assessments may be carried out at college. A small kit of floristry equipment will be provided but this does not include flowers and floristry sundries unless you are on an Advanced

TREES AND TIMBER NVQ LEVEL 2 (FORESTRY OR ABORICULTURE)
Forestry - This work-based course is designed for those aged 18+ with a job in the forestry sector, who want to earn while they learn. The course covers: care and management of trees, woodland and timber. Forestry elements covered include: thinning and felling using chainsaws, planting, care and maintenance of woodlands. Assessments will be carried out both at work and College. Arboriculture - Designed for those aged 18+ with a job in the tree care/arboriculture industry who want to earn while they learn. The course covers: health and safety, maintenance of worksites and arboricultural ground worker operations, disposal of residues and woods, plant care and maintenance. Optional units will cover: tree planting, tree felling, off ground arboricultural operations and use of Mobile Elevated Work Platforms.

Diploma in Work Based Horticulture Level 4
This Business Management course is for the Head Greenkeeper/ Groundsman - Course Manager who wants a qualification that embodies their job role. Registration is open until December 2010 after which time the qualification will be rebadged as a Work Based Diploma at Level 4.
Nine units make up the award, several of which are mandatory. Evidence is compiled in a portfolio and consists of photographs, witness statements, practical job sheets, record sheets, professional discussions, written answers to questions etc: all of which prove competence for both practical and theoretical components of the course. A college based assessor visits the student in the workplace on a regular basis. The course will be provided on a tutorial basis at the college, although the opportunity will be taken to use work based
venues on occasion.
