The progression route for candidates who have completed NVQ3
or the ANCF level 3 qualification at credit level or above.
NPTC Level 4 Higher Diploma in Floristry (HDF award) is designed to
provide opportunities for candidates to demonstrate their skills and
understanding of the principles and practices of commercial floristry
and related subjects that may fall within the role of a senior florist /
manager, freelancers, trainers within the floristry industry. Candidates
must have a strong commercial background to achieve this
qualification.
The course was launched in September 2006 and is awarded by
City and Guilds/NPTC in connection with the Society of floristry.
All certificates will carry the Society of Floristry logo. The
programme was designed to meet current trends and practices
with in the industry. An interview is required and a current portfolio
needs to be seen.
Course delivery:
To gain the Higher Diploma candidates must pass all ten units.
Unit 001: Botanical Concepts & Practices for Floristry
Unit 002: Historical Studies for Floristry
Unit 003: Floral Event Practices
Unit 004: Business Practices for Floristry
Unit 005: Marketing & Promotion Practices for Floristry
Unit 006: Technical Floristry Skills – Tied Designs
Unit 007: Technical Floristry Skills – Wired & Glued Designs
Unit 008: Technical Floristry Skills – Designs in Mediums
Unit 009: Technical Floristry Skills – Design Trends
Unit 010: Design Concepts for Floristry
Entry will be based on an interview for this course. All level 4 courses
are demanding and require complete commitment and enthusiasm.
Assessment:
The course is assessed by three cross-unit assignments and two
examinations – one theory and one practical. The final exams are
assessed by external Society of floristry examiners.
After successful completion of the level 4 award, students may use
the letters HDF after their name. Membership of the Society of
floristry at member level is also possible (MSF).
The next level to consider is the Level 5 NPTC Master Diploma
in professional Floristry (MDPF) at this stage candidates are
recognised as fully qualified professional florists.
Career opportunities:
The prospects for a fully qualified florist are excellent. There is the
scope to choose from a diverse range of careers, for instance past
students have set up many new businesses around the country as
florists and garden centre’s, niche markets exist in many floristry
areas. Other past students have become demonstrators, buyers,
tutors, workplace assessors, contributed to magazines, cruise ship
florists, wholesalers and one lucky lady works in the Bahamas
creating flowers for tropical weddings.
