The course is offered at the Ivyland Farm as well as Plumpton. This programme is designed for those who are interested in a successful career working in the countryside. It has a mixture of theory and practical sessions where you will learn about the wide range of rural industries and habitats, as well as develop practical skills in a range of subjects such as, forestry, countryside management, gamekeeping and estate skills.
Entry Requirements
Students will normally be at least 16 years old on entry and have achieved at least one of the following:
• 2 GCSE passes at grade A-D or above, with a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy.
• appropriate knowledge and/or experience gained in employment.
Mature applicants who do not possess any of the above qualifications will be considered individually.
Indicative Programme Content
The programme is made up of 6 units which include:
• Work Related Experience in Countryside and Environment (compulsory)
• Countryside and Environment industry and Organisations (compulsory).
• Practical Land based Skills
• Conservation and Improvement of British Habitats
• Ecology of Trees, Woods and Forests
• Land Based Machinery Operation
Alongside the main programme you will also study Key Skills, and these are assessed throughout the programme.
Work Experience
The programme includes a minimum of 120 hours work experience, which can be achieved through 2 days per week with a suitable work provider.

• BTEC First Diploma in Countryside and Environment
• Plumpton College First Diploma in Countryside and Environment
• Appropriate additional qualifications
• A BTEC First Certificate can be achieved by successfully completing 3 of the units above
Progression
Successful completion provides the necessary skills you need to start a career such as:
• Countryside Management
• Forestry
• Habitat Maintenance
• Conservation Work
• Wildlife Management
A First Diploma at Merit grade allows progression onto more advanced programmes such as the National Award or National Diploma in appropriate subjects.
